Just a quick word about warranties - they can be confusing. Warranties vary with each manufacturer, but the industry standard is a one year parts and labor warranty which works this way: the factory supplies the contractor with the replacement parts free of charge (although they will not pay for shipping if needed) and the contractor installs them at his own expense. The only way a contractor can cover these costs is by including an amount in his bid when the equipment is installed. That is why it can be difficult to get a service contractor other than the one who installed the equipment to provide warranty service - they won't be reimbursed for labor costs by the manufacturer and will likely charge them to you. So look at the warranty carefully and keep in mind that some manufacturers - like Trane - offer extended factory parts and labor warranties where they pay for labor as well as the parts. This protects you - if something should happen to the contractor your equipment is still covered.
